Non-Ferrous Metals EPR: All you need to Know

India generates approximately 54 lakh tonnes of Aluminium, Copper & Zinc every year.

The Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for the Non-ferrous metals is given under “The Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Amendment Rules, 2025”.

These rules come into force on the 1st April 2026.

What are Non-ferrous Metals?

Non-ferrous metals are metals that do not contain iron in their composition. Non-ferrous metals include:

  1. Aluminium
  2. Copper
  3. Zinc

Significance of these rules:

  2. They are designed to maximize the re-using and recycling of non-ferrous metals and to conserve their finite resources.

  3. The core principle is that businesses involved in producing, selling, import, handling, or recycling the products made from these metals are now responsible for managing the waste generated at their end of life.

Who is it applicable on?

  1. Manufacturer: The one who makes any component, or spare part of the product from non-ferrous metals listed.
