A site that is used to dispose municipal waste in a controlled manner can be referred to as a Landfill Site.

Landfills where solid waste is isolated from the environment till it is safe are known as Sanitary Landfills.

Sanitary Landfill sites have :

  • Barriers at the bottom that prevent the groundwater from contaminating from leachate.
  • Well buried and compacted layers of waste and soil
  • A layer of synthetic barrier or liner or clay in order to prevent water from entering
  • Final topsoil cover that is placed, compacted and graded, and various forms of vegetation may be planted in order to reclaim the otherwise useless land.
