All types of waste that is generated as a result of medical practices and procedures (either directly or indirectly) that contains organic material can be referred to as Biomedical Waste. Biomedical waste is a type of biowaste.Biomedical waste may be solid or liquid.

Biomedical Waste can also be defined as any kind of waste containing:

  • Infectious (or potentially infectious) materials
  • Biomolecules or organisms that are restricted from environmental release

Examples of Biomedical Waste:

  • Infusion Kits
  • Packaging of medical or laboratory origin
  • Used Bandages and Dressings
  • Discarded Blood
  • Sharps
    • Needles
    • Scalpels
    • Lancets
  • Unwanted Microbiological Cultures and Stocks
  • Identifiable body parts
