As per definitation, Green Steel shall be expressed as percentage of greenness of steel which is produced from the steel plant having emissions intensity less than 2.2 tonnes of CO2e per tonne of finished steel (tfs).

In other words, steel having emission intensity greater than 2.2 tonnes of CO2e per tonne of finished steel shall not be eligble for green rating.

Furthermore, the Green Steel Taxonomy of India introduces the following salient features :

  • The Green Steel Rating shall be based on the on the emissions intensities
    • Five Star green-rated steel : 1.6 tCO2e/tfs.
All steel that has emission intensity less than 1.6 tCO2e per tonne of finished steel.
    • Four Star green-rated steel : > 1.6 tCO2e /tfs and < 2.0 tCO2e /tfs
All steel that has emission intensity less than 2.0 tCO2e per tonne of finished steel but greater than 1.6 tCO2e per tonne of finished steel.
    • Three Star green-rated steel : > 2.0 tCO2e /tfs and < 2.2 tCO2e /tfs
All steel that has emission intensity less than 2.2 tCO2e per tonne of finished steel but greater than 2.0 tCO2e per tonne of finished steel.
  • The threshold values or limits for defining the star ratings shall be reviewed every 3 Years.
  • The issuance of certificates will be on a yearly basis (financial year).
  • For those steel plants that opt for MRV more frequently, certificates in the corresponding frequency may be issued.
