India generates approximately 54 lakh tonnes of Aluminium, Copper & Zinc every year.
The Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for the Non-ferrous metals is given under “The Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Amendment Rules, 2025”.
These rules come into force on the 1st April 2026.
What are Non-ferrous Metals?
Non-ferrous metals are metals that do not contain iron in their composition. Non-ferrous metals include:
Aluminium
Copper
Zinc
And their Alloys
Significance of these rules:
EPR means the responsibility of a producer for the sustainable management of the product until the end of its life.
They are designed to maximize the re-using and recycling of non-ferrous metals and to conserve their finite resources.
The core principle is that businesses involved in producing, selling, import, handling, or recycling the products made from these metals are now responsible for managing the waste generated at their end of life.
Who is it applicable on?
Manufacturer: The one who makes any component, or spare part of the product from non-ferrous metals listed.
Producer: The one who manufactures, imports or sells non-ferrous metal products given in the list.
Collection Agent: The one who collects scrap of non-ferrous metals.
Refurbisher: The one who repairs the non-ferrous metal products to extend its working life.
Recycler: The one who recycles scrap of non-ferrous metals.
Bulk Consumer: The one who is using at least 1,000 tons per year of non-ferrous metal products.
