Waste segregation at source reduces 250-tonne of garbage dump.
On 18 July 2017, MCGM (Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai) in its circular, set a deadline of 2 October 2017 directing all respective wards to process waste by Waste Generators aiming to reduce overall waste generation in the city.
Circular Directives
For all Complexes having built up area of 20,000 m2 and above:
- All types of garbage is to be processed on site and is to be disposed in such cases.
- Garbage of all types will not be lifted from such premises from 2 October 2017.
- Non Compliance shall result in penalizing under the provisions of Environment Protection Act,1986.
For all Complexes having built up area of 5,000 m2 and above:
- Waste generators must segregate waste at source into Wet Waste and Dry Waste.
- Dry waste shall only be collected by authorized waste pickers or authorized recycler of dry waste.
- Wet Waste shall be processed in phased manner i.e. 99% biodegradable waste processing like composting, bio-methanation.
For all Complexes having built up area of 2,000 m2 and above being constructed after 02/04/2016:
- Treat wet waste in-situ as per IOD
For Bulk Waste Generators/ Housing Societies generating waste of more than 100 kgs/day:
- Segregate waste at source
- Dry waste shall only be collected by authorized waste pickers or authorized recycler of dry waste.
- Wet Waste shall be processed in phased manner i.e. 99% biodegradable waste processing like composting, bio-methanation.
