Ecomark Scheme was launched first in 1991.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) on 26th Septmeber 2024 notified the Ecomark Rules 2024.
The Ecomark Rules, 2024 came into force from 1st October 2024, the official date of their publication in the Official Gazette.
These rules are intended by the Government of India to encourage the demand for environment friendly products and enables the consumers to make informed purchase or procurement decisions. It shall also encourage the manufactures to adapt and transition towards more sustainable practices.
The Ecomark Rules 2024 shall be implemented by the Central Pollution Control Board in partnership with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). These rules shall also replace the Ecomark Scheme of 1991.
Grant of Ecomark
Products that meet specific sustainability or environmental criterias may be granted an Ecomark. The grant of this Ecomark may validate :
- Resource Consumption
- Environmental Impacts
- On Climate Change
- On Nature
- On Biodiversity
- Energy Consumption
- Use of Recycled Material or is Recyclable or both
- Generation of Waste
- Emissions
- Pollution through physical effect
- Use and release of Hazardous Substances
Criteria for grant of Ecomark

- Effect and Extent of Emissions from Waste Generation

- Compliance with regulations such as EPR ( Extended Producer Responsibility ) [if applicable]
- Utilization of

- Recycled Materials
- Use and release of Hazardous Substances
