Digital Product Passport timeline: when each EU passport becomes required
No product needs an EU Digital Product Passport today. The first two passports start within four months: the Euro 7 vehicle passport on 29 November 2026 and the battery passport on 18 February 2027.
The tables below keep dates fixed in law apart from dates the European Commission only plans, and each row names its source. Every change found in a check is logged at the end of the page.

Which passport dates are fixed in EU law?
Six EU laws already set a passport date, or the rule that will produce one. A date here moves only if the law itself is amended.
| Date | Products | What applies | Law |
|---|---|---|---|
| New car and van types | Environmental Vehicle Passport | Euro 7 Regulation | |
| Electric vehicle batteries, e-bike and e-scooter batteries, industrial batteries over 2 kWh | Battery passport. From the same day, every battery also carries a QR code. | Batteries Regulation | |
| Detergents and surfactants | Detergent passport | Detergents Regulation | |
| Toys | Toy passport, which takes the place of the paper EU declaration of conformity | Toy Safety Regulation | |
| Cars and vans | Digital Circularity Vehicle Passport | End-of-Life Vehicles Regulation | |
| No date yet | Construction products | A passport 18 months after the Commission's act setting up the passport system takes effect, planned for the second quarter of 2027. The product's family must also have moved under the 2024 rules. | Construction Products Regulation |
When do the Ecodesign product groups get their passports?
Most products will get a passport through the EU’s Ecodesign Regulation, one product group at a time. Each group first needs its own rules, called a delegated act, and the passport normally applies at least 18 months after those rules take effect. No group has its rules yet, so the years below are the Commission’s plan for adopting them. The Commission calls that plan indicative, and some of its dates have already moved.
| Product group | Rules planned for | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Iron and steel | Q4 2026 | Planned |
| Energy-related products | 2026 to 2029 | Planned |
| Textiles and apparel, aluminium, tyres | Q3 to Q4 2027 | Planned |
| Furniture | 2028 | Planned |
| Mattresses, ICT products | 2029 | Planned |
Suppose the steel rules are adopted in December 2026. A two-month objection period and publication would bring them into force around March 2027. Adding 18 months, a steel producer would need passports from around September 2028 at the earliest.
What else is on the calendar?
A passport also depends on the EU registry, the technical standards and the rules on who may read which data. These dates decide when a passport can actually be registered and checked at the border.
| Date | What happens | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 July 2026 | The EU passport registry opened with a test environment. The Commission's user guide of 16 September 2026 says passports cannot yet be registered. | Live | Registry user guide |
| November 2026 | A Commission decision citing the last two passport standards, on access rights, security and authentication | Planned | Commission passport page |
| 23 November 2026 | Indicative opening of the European Parliament plenary session due to vote on the Omnibus IV simplification package, agreed in June 2026. It would put the declaration of conformity only in the passport where another EU law already requires it to be there. | Proposal | Parliament procedure file |
| Q4 2026 | Rules on who may see which parts of the battery passport. The draft was published for feedback on 19 October 2026. | Draft | Commission feedback page |
| 6 August 2030 | Deadline for linking EU customs systems to the registry, so passports can be checked automatically at import | In law | Ecodesign Regulation |
In law means published in the EU Official Journal. Draft means published for comment. Proposal means not yet adopted by the European Parliament and the Council. Planned means the Commission’s own timeline.
What changed since the last check?
- 22 October 2026
Three corrections. Construction products: one Commission act sets up the passport system. Omnibus IV: the text was agreed in June 2026. Finder: the passport duty stays with a manufacturer outside the EU.
- 22 October 2026
No new passport law in the Official Journal. The Commission's timeline gives November 2026 for the decision on the last two standards, which it had first planned for September.
- 19 October 2026
The Commission published draft rules on access to battery passport data, open for four weeks of feedback.
