An LCA critical review is an independent check that a life cycle assessment meets the ISO requirements on method, data, interpretation and transparency. It sits inside the life cycle assessment framework of ISO 14040 and ISO 14044: the four phases produce the study, and the review confirms the study remains defensible. ISO 14044 sets the requirement, and the scope and type of review are fixed during goal and scope definition, alongside the functional unit and system boundary.
When a critical review is needed
The trigger is the intended use of the results. A study not intended to support a public comparative assertion may be reviewed by a single independent expert, whether internal or external. A study whose results support a comparative assertion disclosed to the public, meaning a claim that one product is environmentally superior or equivalent to a competing product, must be reviewed by a panel.

Who performs the review
The reviewer or panel must be independent of the study.
